FUTURA
Type Specimen Project
Otis 2020
This type specimen project was an exploration into the typography of a chosen classic font for the Typography I course. Explorations included history, geometry, and different uses of the font with varying weights and sizes.

Process
The Type Specimen project was meant to explore the nuances of a classic font, serif or sans serif, in the context of its history, shape, and usage. I chose the Futura font family for this project for its geometric design and modern aesthetic. Designed by Paul Renner in 127, the Futura font family has an almost-perfect geometric design with multiple weights. When weights are contrasted against each other, the design becomes a hierography of information.
I selected various types of quotes to use as a basis for my explorations in order to see how different weights worked in tandem with each other, in long and short-form contexts. From a short quote to a small excerpt of literary prose, contrasting weights, colors and lengths of text created dynamic interactions all within the same font family.
I chose a warm blue hue as my accent color (a requirement of the project) because I wanted to use a color that felt both calm and had plenty of opportunities for contrast. The lighter shades of the blue showed an electric luminance that emphasized the font's feature curves and angles. Conversely, the muted tone of the same blue yielded a subtle contrast that felt more mellow, but still worked in varied weights.
